About Me
I'm Alex (Alexandra is just for bylines) and I've been a journalist for nearly two decades, with a background in news and current affairs accompanied by a low hum of restaurant reviewing since 2012.
Today I specialise almost exclusively in food and travel and write for Gourmet Traveller (where I'm also the NSW state editor for the Annual Restaurant Guide), the Australian Financial Review, Escape, The Australian, Qantas Magazine, Food & Wine and Rampart.
I'm the Oceania Academy Chair for the World's 50 Best Restaurants, overseeing Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and the Pacific Islands.

"I've been commissioning work from Alex Carlton for more than a decade. Why? Because I know she'll do a great job, writing to brief, to budget, to length and to deadline, every time. She's collaborative, responsive, and intelligent; there are very few freelance writers in Australia that I'd recommend so readily. And even after all these years, she has never lost the freshness, the insight and the wit that impressed me the first time we worked together. Dare I say it, she's even gotten better."

"Obviously she has a way with words but Alex's great strength is that she captures the magical moments of travel and makes them come alive for the reader."
Kirsten Galliott
Editor-in-Chief
Qantas magazine and Travel Insider
"A regular contributor to Escape, Alex tackles the realities of travel in a thought-provoking and entertaining way. Her gifted story telling enlightens and inspires our readers whether it be the rules of plane etiquette or a review of a luxury resort in Thailand."
